The 84% Problem
Eighty-four percent. That's the share of hospital bathroom surfaces that showed bacterial growth in a 2024 study that took 665 surface samples (Journal of Hospital Infection, 2024). And that was a hospital—with professional cleaning staff. Your home bathroom isn't magically cleaner. It's probably worse, because the most common household cleaning frequency is just once a week (MDPI Hygiene, 2025).
If you're like most people, you grab a spray, give the toilet a swipe, maybe mop the floor, and call it done. But the science says that's not enough. In fact, plain detergent and hot water—even if you scrub—produce no observable reduction in microbial contamination (Journal of Applied Bacteriology, 1985). That's not a typo. Zero.

Imagine You're a Busy Parent

The Toilet Plume Is the Real Enemy
Here's something most people don't know: flushing the toilet aerosolizes a plume of bacteria and viruses. So when you flush with the lid up, you're spraying your bathroom—and your toothbrush—with whatever's in that bowl. A study found that toothbrushes stored in bathrooms can harbor pathogens like E. coli and Pseudomonas (Bioinformation, 2025). The solution? Close the lid before flushing. It's not perfect—gaps around the seat can still let some aerosol escape—but it cuts the risk significantly, as C. difficile concentrations were 12-fold lower with the lid down (AJIC, 2013).
Bleach vs. Steam vs. UV: What Actually Works

Steam is the standout. A home steam device, like a handheld steamer, can completely eradicate bacteria like MRSA in 60 seconds (Scientific Reports, 2025). Don't Forget the Shower and Sink
Most people focus on the toilet, but the shower is a breeding ground. Showerheads harbor mycobacteria—the most abundant genus in residential showerheads, according to a 2018 study of 656 households (mBio, 2018). And vinyl shower curtains develop biofilms with opportunistic pathogens (AEM, 2004).
Here's a simple checklist for the rest of the bathroom:
- Spray shower curtain with a disinfectant or run it through the wash with bleach (if machine-washable).
- Soak showerhead in vinegar or use a steam cleaner on it.
- Wipe down sink and faucet handles with an EPA-registered disinfectant (EPA List N).
- Don't share bath towels if someone has a skin infection—MRSA can spread that way (Lancet ID, 2020).
And those microfiber cloths you like? They're fine, but they lose effectiveness after repeated washing—performance drops after 150 washes (JHI, 2011). Replace them regularly.
What I'd Actually Do
If you want to truly sanitize your bathroom without turning it into a chemistry lab, here's my recommendation: stop relying on bleach as your go-to. Use a steam cleaner for most surfaces—toilet bowl, seat, floor, shower, sink—because it's fast, chemical-free, and kills the tough stuff like C. difficile spores. Then, once a week, do a bleach wipe-down on high-touch areas like the flush handle and doorknob, using the CDC's 1-minute recipe.
But the single most important habit? Close the lid before you flush. It's free, it's easy, and it keeps your toothbrush out of the toilet plume. Pair that with washing your hands properly—soap and water, not antibacterial soap, which the FDA banned in 2016 because it's no better than plain soap (FDA)—and you've cut your risk significantly.
Your bathroom will never be sterile, and it doesn't need to be. But 84% of surfaces growing bacteria? That's a number you can beat.
