Mold in the bathroom is more than an eyesore. The EPA says that if mold reappears in the shower or elsewhere, increasing ventilation and cleaning more frequently will usually prevent it (EPA Mold Cleanup in Your Home). But when you already have a patch of black gunk in the grout, you need a disinfectant that actually kills the spores—and not all methods are equal. We've been in the trenches, scrubbing bathrooms in homes and hospitals, and we've learned that the choice between bleach, steam, and UV-C isn't just about label claims. It's about contact time, surface type, and whether you're willing to wait.
The Contenders and the Criteria
We're putting three common approaches head-to-head: chlorine bleach (the old standby), steam at 100°C (the modern gadget), and UV-C light (the high-tech option). We'll judge them on four criteria that matter in real bathrooms: spore-killing efficacy, practicality (including contact time and surface compatibility), safety, and cost. Bleach: The Workhorse with a Catch
Bleach is the default for many, and for good reason: high-concentration bleach (5,000 ppm) inactivated at least 6-log of C. difficile spores within 10 minutes of contact time—that's a 99.9999% kill (Journal of Applied Bacteriology (1985)). But there's a catch: that same study found bleach was not effective at 1 or 5 minutes, and it dries visibly in about 4 minutes, requiring reapplication. So you need to keep the surface wet for the full 10 minutes—which is a long time to stand there with a spray bottle. For mold, the CDC's standard diluted-bleach recipe is 5 tablespoons (1/3 cup) of unscented household bleach per gallon of water, left on the surface at least 1 minute while staying visibly wet (CDC Cleaning and Disinfecting with Bleach). But that 1-minute contact time is for general disinfection, not for stubborn spores. For norovirus, the CDC recommends a stronger solution (5 tablespoons to 1.5 cups per gallon) left for 5 minutes (CDC Norovirus Prevention at Youth Camps). So bleach can work, but it demands patience and reapplication.
Steam: The Porous-Surface Savior
Steam has been a game-changer in our practice, especially for porous materials where bleach falls short. A 120-second steam treatment reduced C. difficile endospores on nylon carpet by 4.9 log10 on water-permeable backing and more than 6.0 log10 on waterproof backing, outperforming the three chemical disinfectants tested (Applied and Environmental Microbiology (2025) Steam). Even better, exposure to steam at 100°C for 60 seconds completely eradicated test bacteria including Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and MRSA (Scientific Reports (2025) Home Steam Device). And unlike bleach, steam doesn't leave a residue or require a long wet time—the heat does the work. In a review of virus disinfection on porous materials, chlorine and steam were the most effective antimicrobials (Microorganisms (2025) Porous Material Disinfection). That's why we reach for a steam cleaner on grout, shower curtains, and even wooden fixtures.
UV-C: The High-Tech Gamble
UV-C sounds appealing: no chemicals, no scrubbing. But the evidence is mixed. In a hospital study, adding UV disinfection after daily bleach cleaning of rooms of C. difficile patients did not significantly reduce contamination: 27% of rooms were heavily contaminated before UV versus 21% after (p = 0.46) (BMC Infectious Diseases (2026) UV and C. difficile). And C. difficile spores are extremely resistant to far-UVC at 222 nm, requiring impractical doses exceeding 1000 mJ/cm2 (Life (2026) Far-UVC Resistance Review). That's a dose you won't get from a consumer wand. Plus, the FDA warns that some hand-held UV-C wands give off as much as 3,000 times more UV-C radiation than recommended exposure limits when held about two inches from a surface, and can injure skin or eyes after a few seconds (FDA Beware of Ultraviolet Wands). UV-C also can't penetrate dust or grime, so it's only a supplement, not a replacement. For mold in a bathroom, where spores hide in crevices, UV-C is a gamble we don't recommend.

Who Should Use Which
If you're a renter who needs a quick fix on a budget, bleach is your friend—just be prepared to apply it generously and wait the full contact time. If you own your home and deal with recurring mold in grout or on shower curtains, invest in a steam cleaner; it's the only method that reliably penetrates porous surfaces and kills spores in under two minutes. UV-C is best left to professionals with calibrated equipment; for home use, the FDA's warning about unsafe exposure levels is enough to steer us away.

What I'd Actually Do
For most bathrooms, I'd skip the UV wand and the bleach fumes. I'd buy a steam cleaner with a brush attachment, blast the grout and shower curtain at 100°C for 60 seconds per spot, and follow up with a quick wipe. That's what the evidence supports: steam outperforms chemicals on porous surfaces and doesn't require a 10-minute wait. If you're on a tight budget, use bleach, but only if you can keep it wet for the full contact time—set a timer, because 4 minutes of drying means you'll need to reapply. And always address the underlying moisture problem: run the fan, fix leaks, and clean regularly. That's the real battle.
